Revolutionising Healthcare Delivery in Sarawak through Digital Innovation

2 February 2024, Kuching – Sarawak remains a trailblazer in leveraging digital solutions for enhanced service delivery. The Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) Sarawak Regional Office, in collaboration with private hospitals in Sarawak, has initiated the Diagnosis-Related Group (Casemix) program. Normah Medical Specialist Hospital (NMSC) is one of the hospitals actively engaged in this transformative initiative, aligning with MPC's commitment to fortify the healthcare ecosystem in Sarawak. The comprehensive capacity-building program for NMSC spanned from December 2023 to January 2024, involving various departments.

The globally recognised Casemix system systematically classifies patients based on clinical similarity and resource homogeneity. Widely adopted in advanced countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Australia, as well as neighbouring nations like Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, Casemix has demonstrated its ability to enhance healthcare cost transparency and support national health financing, ultimately resulting in improved healthcare delivery.

Professor Dato' Dr. Syed Mohamed Aljunid, the Lead Consultant and Developer of MY-DRG Casemix System, emphasizes that Casemix can yield significant cost savings up to 20% of the operational cost for a hospital and boost productivity through efficient resource utilisation and competitive tariff application. Prof. Aljunid, also the lead facilitator for the Casemix pilot implementation in Sarawak, underscores the critical success factors: top management support, the establishment of a Casemix Implementation Committee in hospitals, utilisation of routinely collected data, and the use of available IT systems.

NMSC appreciates MPC's support in embarking on this transformative journey, recognising its potential for long-term benefits in service delivery improvement. NMSC believes that Casemix will enhance inpatient care efficiency and the quality of services provided to patients. The data analysed through Casemix will be pivotal for budgeting, forecasting, and identifying areas of improvement to ensure superior patient care.

MPC is committed in supporting the state and national agendas to elevate productivity in the healthcare sector. Collaborating closely with stakeholders from both public and private sectors in Sarawak, MPC aims to establish a robust public-private healthcare ecosystem, positioning Sarawak at the forefront of healthcare delivery in Malaysia.

End.
