Securing Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) Supply for the Nation #2

Ensuring a Stable and Reliable Supply of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) for National Healthcare Needs

The meeting was chaired by MITI, aims to explore strategies for reducing Malaysia’s reliance on imported Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and enhancing supply chain resilience.

Members of meeting was agreed on a strategic approach centered on stockpiling, backward integration, and regional collaboration as essential measures to bolster local API production. The discussion emphasized the need for strong coordination between the government and industry players to ensure the effective implementation and long-term sustainability of the API sector.

Moving forward, members committed to identifying and prioritizing high-demand APIs based on volume and value to ensure a targeted approach to strengthening local production. To facilitate this, MITI will engage with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to obtain detailed data on national API demand, which will help in determining the most critical APIs for local manufacturing. At the same time, industry stakeholders will develop a comprehensive proposal outlining viable strategies to enhance API supply security. This proposal will include recommendations for funding mechanisms under the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) and the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) to secure financial support for initiatives aimed at reducing import reliance and fostering a resilient domestic API ecosystem.
